Bernard and Rachel Chadwick are the husband-and-wife duo that create pop/rock music imbued with love and artisanship. Theirs is an enviable creative relationship built around making more of themselves and the world through collaboration. The band started while Bernard was earning his MFA in Pasadena, California. It was a way for rock to fuse into art and art to fuse into rock. This became the exact intention of their music going forward. The band’s incorporation of pop sensibilities, ethereal vocals, insightful lyrics and rock undertones give them a sound that is unique, fun and sure to keep you grooving. Their summer single Heartbreak Away, released in July 2019, was featured on Apple Music’s Breaking Alternative and Alt Pop playlists. They are currently working to release their third full length album, coming soon in early 2020.

Primaveras

Channeling various sonic aspects of the past to create something unmistakably of the present, songwriter/brainchild James Clifford creates psych-pop songs that are equally bright and sunny as they are full of longing and introspection. The stretch of Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu to Santa Monica embodies the great dualism of Southern California. Warm breezes through cracked car windows, the soft sound of waves crashing and receding into the Pacific, and the silhouette of Los Angeles are beautiful in a timeless, almost dreamlike sort of way. However, those who haven’t stuck around long enough often fail to notice the effects of erosion; buildings and signs that line the coast are faded and rusty from the salt air, evoking feelings of loneliness and emptiness. Primaveras’ debut LP, Echoes in the Well of Being, also embodies this dualism. The record at times can feel like a journey through the evolution of pop music from the second half of the 20th century—60’s pop-inspired melodies are complemented by 70’s guitar licks and early 80’s synth lines, which makes for a listening experience that is somewhere between Pink Floyd’s Live at Pompeii and Chic’s second album. Whether one takes the Coast Highway out of the city or into it, Primaveras’ debut record is the perfect soundtrack for a blissful escape.

KiNG MALA

KiNG MALA is an alternative soul trio from Los Angeles. A soulful blend of ripping alternative rock and sultry vocals, KiNG MALA takes an unlikely combination of influences and turns it into an emotional release. With a guitarist (Anthony Aceves) inspired by jazz fusion, a grunge drummer (Drew Esselstrom) and a classically trained soul vocalist and bassist (Areli Castro), the band uses their precision, and lack there of, to deliver the cascading stories of heartbreak, redemption and trying to fill the shoes life hands you. This Fall, their EP “Dahlia” will take you on the journey between self doubt and self-discovery. Their debut single drops on October 22nd.

Follies & Vices

Follies & Vices are the indie duo consisting of Rob Auerbach and Tanner Houghton, who got their start in Seattle but pointed their van south on the I-5 a couple of years ago and relocated to Los Angeles. Their music is often described as fun, playful, groovy, and hopeful, but when one takes a closer listen to Houghton’s lyrics, they'll notice undertones of heartbreak and tragedy. This results in a unique blend that is both feel-good and thought-provoking. The boys have showcased their eclectic blend of indie, pop and hip-hop music with their four independent releases “Red Wine,” “Don’t Hold Back,” “Wake Up,” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me,” and they are currently at work on their debut EP.
