Memory Motel is a 3 piece rock band from Reno, Nevada fronted by CJ Gibson, with a rhythm section featuring brothers Ben and Sam Ashlock. They were formed originally by CJ and Sam in 2010. The play a wide variety of music loosely labeled pop but it is very hard to nail down a specific genre. There music ranges from headbanging garage rock, to stompy folk rock to intricate electronic-

Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, White Dove is comprised of songwriter Alex Johnstone (guitar/vocals), Jack Long (guitar), Carl Harders (bass) and Michael Morgan (drums). LA native Johnstone and East-Coast transplants Long and Harders formed White Dove in 2009. The trio bonded over a shared love of classic California rock and pop such as The Byrds, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young and Dennis Wilson.

On their new 7″ Caroline / Sarah’s Song (Ring The Alarm Records formerly White Iris), White Dove have elaborated on their earlier Mazzy Star meets Emmit Rhodes sound, developed on their 2013 full length, The Hoss, The Candle (RSRCH and DVLP). The new single, recorded with producer Luke Top (Fool’s Gold), finds White Dove’s prismatic sound pushed further to new shimmering heights. A-side “Caroline” shows the band at their most direct. Singer Alex Johnstone’s stirring vocals ring with a bell-like clarity, with lyrics that are both cryptic yet revealing: “And if I’m wrong, but if I’m right, we continue on throughout the lonely night.” Long’s twisting Johnny Marr-ish guitar lines add to the song’s infectious energy while Harder’s bass provides an inescapable Cure-like impetus.

B-side “Sarah’s Song” tells a lyrically apocalyptic tale built upon Morgan’s Spector-esque beat and Harder’s doo-wop bass line. The first half of the song calls to mind elements of Opal and Big Star’s Third before sliding into a wordless Beach Boys style bridge. The song culminates in a haunting denouement with Gene Clark underpinnings. LA Record recently noted of the band: “Like all the best music, this would sound really good playing on a car stereo on a late night desert drive. It’s a little sad, a little lonely and very lovely and Los Angeles should be proud that a band like White Dove calls it home.”

Maxim Ludwig
Maxim Ludwig is a man of big appetites. In life and in art, he doesn’t have much use for the word ‘no’, and he doesn’t think you should either. Ludwig sees nothing wrong with drinking too much, eating too much, staying out too late or running a harmonica thru a talk box, vibrato pedal, and Leslie speaker. Yes, Maxim Ludwig is his real name.

Ludwig started out in L.A. playing roots rock in the late 2000’s. He released his debut album as Maxim Ludwig and the Santa Fe Seven, in 2009 and the LA Times called him a, "brash maverick who sees rules to be broken and not followed". After becoming disillusioned with the music industry, he worked as a foreman in a Downtown L.A. packaging plant for close to two years. Then in 2014, he returned to embark as a solo performer on a three-month European and North American tour, opening for Robert Francis, for whom he also plays guitar and keyboards.

And now, for the first time, Ludwig is working under his own name exclusively and doing exactly what he wants to do, musically and otherwise. Ludwig says, “I was your typical angry young man and the songs reflected that.” He admits that he listened to a lot of bad advice early in his career and strayed from his instincts. But on his new material, beginning with the forthcoming EP, “Is that A Real Song Or Did You Make It Up Yourself?” Ludwig is done compromising. “I didn’t have a manager or a band or anyone giving me their two cents about these songs,” says Ludwig “It was just me and my best friend [producer and engineer Sean O’Brien (Harriet)] trying to get to a place where it was something we wanted to listen to.”

Ludwig’s songs sound simultaneously brand new and hauntingly familiar. He takes his inspiration wherever it hits, drawing compulsively from Stax soul, outlaw country, krautrock, and Afrobeat—material he melts down and re-purposes like a mad sculptor. What keeps the sound grounded are the songs themselves. A student of the Brill Building school, Ludwig is a master of the classic pop song. He’s a sucker for a great chorus and an undeniable hook. But where he takes the most pleasure is in the contradiction: writing songs that Elvis Costello could have penned but playing them like Sly Stone.

Ludwig lives his life teetering between brilliance and humiliation, ecstasy and despair. He’s never shy with his body, always generous with his company. Hedonistic and passionate. His songs and live shows are a reckoning with the hunger that drives him to acts of recklessness, stupidity and sometimes even greatness. Indeed, Ludwig seeks greatness everywhere he can, pushing each chord progression and every drunken night to its fullest and purest realization.
